She sat dumbstruck when he had finished.

Rita could not decide on anything. It was the day after the revelation about Nikhil. He seemed pleasant that morning.

He was happy after offloading his pain. He had been worried while telling her, unable to assess what her reaction might be. But nothing terrible happened. She was calm like never before. An impossible thing, according to him.

She sat silent, as if there were nothing new in what he said.

Her numbness frightened him at one point. Yet, he continued. He had to tell her. There was no way out.

How long could he live with it?

Rita could not concentrate on her household chores. Her mind was wandering in unknown places while she was in kitchen. Her condition was similar to that of a needle of a weighing scale.

Dangling in between.

The thought pinched her at every moment. The RAW had bugged her house long ago. They were (and still are) listening to everything they said inside.

‘Where are they?’ she had asked Congo. ‘The bugs.’

He shook his head. He posed a question. ‘No, I won’t tell you that. What if you decide to double-cross us?’

She did not press the issue. Let them be. Her mind went (unwantedly) to their lovemaking sessions earlier. The noise they used to make.

Thank God, it has been months since we explored each other.

‘It is easy to find out,’ she said. ‘If I want to. A thorough search of the house would be enough. No one knows the house better than the lady.’

‘Would you do it?’ He winked. ‘I don’t think so.’

She did not respond. He was right. They may destroy our lives if we don’t cooperate, she assumed.

Everything seemed like a fairy tale to her. Someone wants to destroy someone else. Some crooks conspire to achieve their goal. The goal, the other’s destruction.

Everything for a piece of land and meaningless pennies.

Nikhil hurried through breakfast that morning. He had lost his appetite.

She remembered his words from the previous evening: I don’t know how to come out of this whirlpool.

But I know, she thought. I know.
